This NLA for Her Protein review is about a protein powder supplement for women, which is made by a relatively new manufacturer that is operating since 2012.
NLA for Her make products exclusively for women and believe that women should not have to resort to buying either weak vegan-based supplements or those that are intended for men and as a result tend to be too strong for women.
We’ll take a look at their NLA for Her Her Whey Protein and see how it holds up against other protein powder supplements for women, and against some for men.
This product is featured in our Best Protein Powder Supplements for Women top 10 list, where you can go and check out where it stands when compared to similar products from other manufacturers.
And in case you need to refresh your memory about Whey Protein Powder Supplements in general – why it’s good for you and why people who have regular intensive training sessions should take it – you can read about it at Whey Protein Supplements Guide: Facts, Benefits, Features.
Now let’s get on with the NLA for Her Whey review itself!
Supplement Overview of Her Whey by NLA for Her
Her Whey by NLA for Her is a lean protein dietary supplement made specifically and exclusively for women.
Its main goal is to increase the protein intake of women who need it and also to aid in any weight-loss or weight-management goals that they may have.
According to the manufacturer, this product includes a low carbohydrate blend with added fiber, which will leave its users satiated for longer and help reduce their junk food cravings.
While this increases the overall calorie count of the supplement – if it indeed helps remove or reduce hunger pangs and keep people feeling full for much longer – the extra calories will certainly be worth it.
Additionally, the product is also sugar-free, gluten-free and contains an added amino acid blend to help with recovery.
Now let’s take a closer look at the ingredients!
Ingredient List Analysis
The main ingredient in this sports nutrition supplement by NLA for Her is Whey Protein Isolate.
Whey Isolate is one of the quickest-absorbing proteins and is created by further processing and purifying whey concentrate – the most common form of whey that contains all the bioactive nutrients.
During the purifying process, the whey isolate loses some of these beneficial nutrients and becomes less bio-available. However, all of the important amino acids still remain, and it gets the added benefit of being incredibly fast-digesting, fast-absorbing and fast-acting.
It tends to be around 90%+ of protein by weight, and all or nearly all of the fat and sugars as lactose are removed from it.
This makes Whey Isolate one of the best choices for people who are lactose intolerant or those who have certain allergies or digestive issues.
And finally, it’s also among the most expensive forms of whey.
The other ingredients include added amino acids, most notably BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids), which are there to aid in the recovery and repair of muscles after intensive exercise.
While we don’t like it when a protein supplement gets spiked with additional amino acids, because the protein itself already contains a fair amount – we have no problem with NLA for Her Her Whey doing this, because they actually clearly label the exact amount of each and every amino acid that their product contains.
And we see that they’re well within the healthy limits for grown adults.
The only thing that stands out is Glutamine, at almost 9.5 grams. However, that is a perfectly healthy dose, and this amino acid is necessary for the biosynthesis of protein.
Another thing of note is the inclusion of a vitamin and mineral boost. This supplement contains around 50% of daily value for nearly every possible vitamin and mineral that your body will need after an exercise.
This is great but makes the product a bad choice if you want to consume it more than 2-3 times per day – since you’ll be ingesting too many micronutrients – more than your body needs or in some cases can even handle.
So we strictly recommend taking this supplement only one or two times per day, due to its added vitamin and mineral content.
Other than that, this product contains a Lean Mass Promoting Fatty Acid complex, which contains various fats and triglycerides which promote healthy cell growth, higher metabolic rate and provide people with various other health benefits like better appetite suppression.
Nothing in it particularly stands out, and it’s perfectly healthy for you.
Finally, this product contains Sucralose and Acesulfame-K.
Those who have followed our product reviews are perfectly aware that we have a strong dislike for these artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes.
The reasons behind it are that they’re not a very healthy choice and can potentially cause several unwanted side effects and health hazards – so be wary of them!
The other ingredients listed in Flavors aren’t great either; that is why we always recommend taking an unflavored option, if available.
Protein Supplement Features: The PROs and CONs
- Pure Whey Protein Isolate
- Fast Absorption
- Added Amino Acids, Vitamins & Minerals
- Curbs Appetite
- Sugar Free
- Lactose Free
The added amino acids, vitamins, and other micronutrients are a good touch if you don’t want to take a vitamin supplement along with your protein shake.
The added fiber and the fatty acid complex does a good job of making you feel fuller for longer and suppressing appetite.
- High Fat Content
- High in Calories when compared to similar products
- A Lot of Unnecessary Filler Ingredients, especially flavors
- Exposed to Many Allergens (Eggs, Wheat, Soy, Milk, Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Soybeans, Shellfish and Fish)
- Very Low Protein Per Scoop Ratio (14g in a 25g scoop)
- Artificial Flavors and Sweeteners
The biggest downsides of this supplement are the price and the low protein per scoop content.
Due to just having 14 grams of protein per 25-gram scoop, it is generally recommended, even on the manufacturer’s label, to take two scoops.
But that is not a great idea due to the fact that this supplement contains added vitamins and minerals.
Overconsumption of these elements may cause various health issues and is generally not considered to be a good idea.
Our Evaluation of NLA for Her Whey Protein
This supplement is great – there’s no doubt about it.
However, it does have several downsides, as stated above – which is why it is definitely not for everyone.
We can only recommend it to those who want or need to have extra vitamins and minerals added to their protein shake, for those who want to curb their appetite and for those who want to advance their weight-loss goals.
The price is also an issue since it is exorbitantly high for a whey protein isolate supplement alone.
Her Whey by NLA for Her contains too many unnecessary filler ingredients to be considered completely healthy.
So, if you want a healthier alternative, especially if the price is an issue – you should instead check out other supplements like Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey, or another one made exclusively for women – FitMiss Delight Protein Powder.
This protein powder supplement definitely has some room for improvement, even though our experience with it was splendid.
If it were cleaned up a little, if the protein content were higher than it is now, and if the price was adjusted – it could easily be among the very best in the business. But until that time comes, it’s only great – but not fantastic!
You can’t compare it, for example, to <link to transparent labs>, which is a supplement that’s made for both women and men – so we think you’ll understand why it’s only at #7 on our top 10 list.
But what do you personally think about NLA for Her, Her Whey supplement? Is it better for women than a protein shake made for men – or do you think that there’s not much difference?
We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section where we can start a discussion on the subject!
